Last week Jennifer Sy, Kairros Interpreting Service (KIS) Manager, attended the Australian Institute of Interpreters and Translators (AUSIT) 38th National Conference in Canberra.
Reflecting on the event, one of the strongest sentiments Jennifer took away from the conference was that language is a human right, and the shared responsibility that everyone has – from providers to policy makers – to facilitate the right of communication for everyone. She explained, “Language is a human right – it is fundamental in civic participation, productivity and improved health outcomes. The conference showcased the principle that language and culture should not be barriers, and the importance of programs and services that are tailored to ensure access and equity for all Australians.”
